A MEETING MASTERS MEMO

Writing the New Business Proposal

Previously we learned something about emergency and risk management proceudres. Now, let's review some of the problems faced by proposal writers who get emergency calls from meeting and event producers.

Reprinted from the Writers' Roundtable Newsletter – June, 1994

The following is a guide to a better understanding of ProducerSpeak. It was translated from the original Sanskrit by George Orwell and the Marquis de Sade.

It's late Friday afternoon. A producer calls who needs a client presentation by Monday.

"We just got an unexpected opportunity that's a real challenge!"

  • The writer we hired last week, sucks!

"All our regular writers are busy."

  • We haven't paid the ones we used last time.

"IŽve been hoping for a chance to work with you."

  • The writer we wanted turned us down!

"E-mail some samples, just so we can get an idea of your style."

  • We need some free ideas, fast!

"I know it's a quick turnaround, but a few good pages will do it."

  • It better be at least 25, or forget the check!

"We've got a great head start on essential, in-depth research on client goals and objectives."

  • I think we can dig up the annual report.

"Just give me a ballpark fee. We can work out the details, later."

  • I need a number to throw a $750 reduction at!

"I know we can't pay much now, but if we get the job weŽll make it up to you!"

  • You get to share our problems, dummy! Not our profits!
